The first warehouse of Lemminkäinen
which housed the workshop, warehouse and office space. It was built
in Merisatama district
of Helsinki. The main products of the company – concrete stairs
and steps – were stored in the yard in the early days.
Lemminkäinen is one of the largest groups of building companies
in Finland founded in 1910. At first, the company’s business was
limited to waterproofing and bituminous material works on roads
and yards, but a bit later it expanded the scope of the services
with concrete products. With Finland’s independence from Russia
in 1916, the company boosted its development and opened its first
roofing factory in 1920.
In the 1920’s and the 30’s the company work and development mainly
focused on bituminous concrete production. The company started to
produce hot-mix asphalt or bituminous concrete and carried out its
first road paving contracts.
After the Second World War, Lemminkäinen gradually assumed leadership
of the Finnish bituminous concrete production.
The western approach road to Helsinki,
the so-called Jorvas Road, was paved in the summers of 1938 and
1939. The new asphalt road was a good advertisement for Lemminkäinen
road department.
In the 1950s, the new roofing felt factory of Lemminkäinen was finished,
and production of concrete products was transferred from Helsinki
to Tuusula.
In the 1970s, the company carried out building of different objects
in the territory of the former Soviet Union and even in Africa.
Today, Lemminkäinen Group is globally present in all segments of
the building industry. Its business areas include house building,
infrastructure building, technical building services and production
of building materials.
